Umatilla Defeats Santiam Christian

Umatilla won 5-0

UMATILLA - The Umatilla Vikings defeated the Santiam Christian Eagles 5-0 on Tuesday, November 10, 2009. Umatilla will travel to play Catlin Gable on Saturday, November 14 in the second round of OSAA playoff action.

The day was sunny and warm for early November with a temperature in the mid 50s at kickoff at 2:30 p.m. The temperature began to dip at about 3:45 as the sun neared the horizon.

There was not a long sizing up period by the teams at the start of the match. Umatilla scored the first goal five minutes into the match on a shot by Yeldar Orduna.

The second goal came around the 30th minute when Maximo Bedolla drove up the middle challenging the Santiam goalkeep out of the box then blasting the shot into the net. Umatilla led 2-0.

The third goal came at about the 38th minute when Jonathan Mendoza took the throw in at midfield and drove all the way up the middle for a goal. That gave Umatilla the 3-0 lead at halftime.

The first goal of the second half came in action in front of the net following a corner kick set piece by Umatilla. It took a few tries but Pedro Mendoza got the goal in the third minute giving Umatilla the 4-0 lead.

Yeldar Orduna closed out the game with a goal in the 30th minute of the second half as he zigzagged his way through the Santiam defenders. Umatilla won the match 5-0.

The Umatilla Vikings celebrated the win by dousing coach Pedro Ortiz with a bucket of Gatorade.

"It felt good." said Maximo Bedolla on scoring the second goal for Umatilla. "We're feeling confident this year. I think we can go all the way. We've got to take on the best to be the best."

Umatilla junior Yeldar Orduna had two goals, "It felt good to win. We're going to play in the second round. I feel better this year."

Sophomore Pedro Mendoza scored a goal, "It's great playing with the older guys."

"It feels good winning." said Sophomore Jonathan Mendoza. "It has been a good season this year. We've had a lot of fun working together as a team. We have a good chance at the championship.

After drying off Pedro Ortiz was all smiles about the teams win. "It feels just great. We play well together but I'm always looking for more. We still have some things we have to work on. We try things in practice and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.
