Weston McEwen Defeats Umatilla

Weston McEwen won 11-1

UMATILLA - The Weston McEwen Tiger Scots defeated the Umatilla Vikings 11-1 in softball action on Tuesday, March 30, 2010. The Vikings, who are coached by Rachel Allen, showed obvious improvement over last years team as they challenged the Tiger Scots throughout the game. Umatilla was within striking distance until the top of the fifth inning when Weston McEwen pulled away for the win.

The Tiger Scots took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first with a couple of grounders and two hits to center field. The Vikings lead off hitter in the bottom of the first, Kassie Kennedy, hit a long shot to left field. She made her away around to third base. Sarah Longhorn then hit a grounder to left field driving in Kennedy for the Viking score. Katelynn Cranston was able to get on base with a grounder. Umatilla was looking good with two runners on base. The Tiger Scots pitcher took control and struck out the next two batters. Weston McEwen led 3-1 at the end of the first inning.

Weston McEwen scored two runs in the top of the second on a hit to deep center field and a grounder to third. The Tiger Scots led 5-1 halfway through the second inning. Umatilla batters connected with the ball in the bottom fo the second but the Vikings ended up with three groundouts.

The two teams went scoreless in the third inning.

The Tiger Scots scored one run in the top of the fourth to take a 6-1 lead.

The Tiger Scots had a big inning in the top of the fifth. A grounder scored a runner from third. Then a Tiger Scot runner scored on a passball to take a 8-1 lead. Then with one runner on base the WM catcher came up to bat and hit a long ball to center field and stretched it into an inside the park homerun. That gave the Tiger Scots the 10-1 lead. The final score of the game came two batters later on a hit to left field bringing in a runner from second. Ariel Trujillo led off the bottom of the fifth getting on base with a walk. Unfortunately she was stranded there as the Tiger Scot pitcher bore down and struck out the next three batters. Weston McEwen won 11-1.
