UMATILLA 61, BURNS 57 — In Burns, Umatilla boys’ basketaball led by two points late in the fourth quarter, but fouled a Burns player who sank two free throws to force overtime tied at 55.

Andres Sanguino made a layup off a steal in overtime, but the biggest play was senior Forrest McBride knocking down a straightaway three-pointer to cushion a four point lead with time running scarce.

Jorge Campos got four fouls in the first half, played 30 seconds of the fourth quarter and fouled out.

“It’s just amazing,” said coach Chris Wyland. “Any time you lose a starting senior point guard like that and have guys step up in a hostile gym is very impressive. It says a lot about the guys we have on our team.”

BURNS 52, UMATILLA 45 — In Burns, the Umatilla girls’ basketball team lost to Burns on the road Saturday in Eastern Oregon League play.

Burns came out strong early posting a 24-18 lead at the end of the first half, and never looked back.

Umatilla will remain in first place in the OSAA rankings regardless of their loss.

Umatilla plays Riverside Friday.

UMATILLA 41, BURNS 29 — In Umatilla, the Umatilla Vikings (14-1, 1-0 EOL) opened Eastern Oregon League play Friday with a win over Burns (8-5, 0-2 EOL). The Vikings led just 21- 20 at halftime but gave themselves a little cushion in a tight third quarter, outscoring Burns 8-4 in the frame. Ashley Vandever led the Viking charge with 16 points and Catherine Routson and Jessica Siler each chipped in nine. Umatilla will host Grant Union today to continue league play.

UMATILLA 51, BURNS 46 — In Umatilla, the Umatilla Vikings (5-10, 1-0 EOL) held tough for an Eastern Oregon League win Friday to open their league season. Juan Ayala finished with just three points but hit a clutch free throw with two minutes to play that put the Vikings up 45-44. The team was able to close out the win from there. “Any time you start league you want to start on right foot,” said Umatilla coach Chris Wyland. “Our guys did great job of playing hard and playing smart. We had 12 turnovers, which is our season low.” The Vikings came in with a goal to make more free throws than Burns attempted. The Vikings made 14 shots at the charity stripe while Burns attempted 15.

UMATILLA 55, GRANT UNION 54 — In Umatilla, Jorge Campos sank a free throw with a minute to play and Grant Union (7-5, 0-3 EOL) missed a 15-foot jump shot at the buzzer in Eastern Oregon League play Saturday.

Forrest McBride scored a three-point play that regained the lead for Umatilla (6-10, 2-0 EOL) 54-52 late in the fourth quarter. Umatilla led 44-43 headed into the final frame.

“We were down 11 and 12 points numerous times in the second quarter and our guys did an excellent job of responding in the third quarter and finding a way to win the game,” said Umatilla coach Chris Wyland.

Campos led Umatilla with 26 points, Andres Sanguino added 17 and McBride finished with nine.

Ross Rawlins scored 13 of his team-high 21 points in the second quarter for Grant Union but a zone defense by the Vikings limited him in the second half.
