Umatilla places highest among Eastern Oregon schools in book battle
A team from Umatilla High School was the top finisher among Eastern Oregon schools during the April 10 state championships for Oregon Battle among the Books. The event was held at Chemeketa Community College in Salem.

The Viking squad finished in the top four with the team of Angel Cole, Sunny Hayhurst, Kellie Hodges, Jacob Vandever and Mariah Holden. The Umatilla team was coached by Allen Kopf.

Each state competitor had already won at their school level and regional competition. The other regional teams who competed in the tournament were from Helix, Nyssa, Vale and Hermiston.

Helix Elementary was represented by team members Justin Williams, Ashton Marks, Caiden Marks and Bethany Newtson. They were coached by Sharilyn Newtson. Hermiston's Sandstone Middle School team included Rebecca Engelbrecht, Madilyn Hofbauer, Rylee Young and Shelby West. They were coached by Anne Emmons.

Oregon Battle of the Books features a 16-book reading list for each division in a quiz-show format that pits teams of four against other teams. Points are awarded for correct answers to questions taken from the books on the reading list. The statewide reading motivation and comprehension program is sponsored by the Oregon Association of School Libraries in conjunction with a Library Services and Technology Act grant.
