UHS Tennis vs Athena and Stanfield

Boys’ Tennis
UMATILLA 4, STANFIELD 3; UMATILLA 5, WESTON-MCEWEN 2 — In Umatilla, the Umatilla boys’ tennis team got a pair of wins thanks to strong days by Omar Dominguez and the doubles team of Clayton Forshee and Jordan Brown.
Dominguez won both of his No. 3 singles matches and Forshee/Brown teamed to win a No. 1 and a No. 2 doubles match. They were the only Vikings to get two wins on the day.
Martin Rubio defeated Stanfield’s Michael Gehrke 8-5 in No. 1 singles play but Weston-McEwen’s Daniel Winn clipped Umatilla’s Christian Mendoza in their No. 1 singles match 8-2.
Pedro Ortiz and Cole Reiner teamed to win No. 1 doubles against Stanfield’s Tyler Botts and David Nichols 8-5. Botts won his No. 2 singles match against Umatilla’s Jacob Lowrance 8-6.
“The guys played well and are looking better and better each week,” said Umatilla coach Keith Gebers. “Hopefully we peak at the right time which will be two Fridays from today at districts.”
Girls’ Tennis
UMATILLA 9, STANFIELD 1; UMATILLA 5, WESTON-MCEWEN 0 — In Umatilla, the Umatilla girls’ tennis team finished a dominant Friday with two team wins and their only loss coming in No. 5 singles.
Four Vikings won multiple matches — Muranda Cranston, Brandi Carlson, Susan Routson and Stephanie Klucas.
Routson beat Stanfield’s Joy Bremmer 8-4 in No. 1 singles and beat Weston-McEwen’s Melissa Huskey 8-0.
BreAnna Watson and Diana Manriquez played just one match but defeated Stanfield’s Mariella Carillo and Yazell Chavez 8-4 in No. 1 doubles.
“We are really starting to do well and win the matches we are supposed to on the girls’ side,” said Umatilla coach Keith Gebers. “But we are still not close to where we need to be for districts and hopefully we get there.”
