MONMOUTH - The Umatilla Vikings made a strong showing at the first day of the 3A-2A-1A State Track and Field Championships Friday, taking home a first and second place finish.

Sophomore Catherine Routson became the first area athlete to win a title, by out-jumping the field in the high jump with a finals height of 5-feet, 2 inches. Her jump in the prelims was even higher at 5-feet, 3 inches, but both jumps kept her out in front of second place finisher Sara Almen of Santiam Christian.

The Vikings also saw senior Nancy Cardenas medal in her second to last event as a high school track participant. Running in the 3,000 meters, Cardenas finished 15 seconds of the pace of Catlin Gabel's Haley Ney, taking second place with a time of 10:48.71.

Conference rival Riverside also saw a second place finish on opening day, as Chris Benson was just edged out of first place by Ismael Osorio of Reedsport in the shot put.

Benson eclipsed his previous best of 46-feet, 9 inches with a throw of 47-feet, 4 1/4 inches. But Osorio beat the mark by 6 1/4 inches for first place.

In the smallest classification, Ethan Weiser took third place in the pole vault for the Arlington Honkers. His height of 12 feet was tied with second place finisher Ryan Stinson of Gilchrist and three inches away from state champion Kamren Demarce of Lowell.

In the 2A events, Heppner's Jordan Hatfield finished fourth in the triple jump with a jump of 40-feet, 5 inches, almost an inch short of his personal best this season. And Weston-McEwen's Nichole Zeller wrapped up her season with sixth and 10th place finishes in the girls' discus (96-06) and javelin (110-02) respectively.
