VALE 42, UMATILLA 33 — In Vale, the Vale Vikings (15-1, 4-0 EOL) put the Umatilla Vikings (16-2, 3-1 EOL) on notice Saturday with an EOL win.
Though Umatilla went into the game ranked No. 1 in the OSAA, Vale took the early leg up in the district title race after jumping out to a 10-2 lead through one quarter and then fighting off a late Umatilla comeback.
Umatilla, led by Catherine Routson’s 10 points, went 0-for-7 on free throws in the first quarter and missed several easy shots, said coach Scott Bow.
Still, the girls fought to within three points late in the fourth quarter. Forced to foul with time running out, Vale sank its free throws to ice the win.
