UHS Basketball 2010

UMATILLA 46, VALE 42 — In Umatilla, Kassie Kennedy converted an old-fashioned three-point play midway through the fourth quarter to regain the lead by two points for the Umatilla Vikings (19-3, 6-2 EOL) Friday.

More importantly, she swung the momentum of a back-and-forth Eastern Oregon League slugout firmly in the Vikings’ favor.

Kennedy finished with six points while Jessica Siler paced the Vikings with 21 points.

The win puts Umatilla back in the EOL title hunt behind Vale (18-2, 7-1 EOL).

Umatilla hosts Nyssa today before finishing the regular season on Tuesday at Riverside.

UMATILLA 43, NYSSA 28 — In Umatilla, although the Vikings powered through all but two of their league games this season, Nyssa presented Umatilla a new challenge on Saturday.

“This was a game for us,” said Vikings coach Scott Bow. “Nyssa slowed us down trying not to let us run. They pretty much tried to stall from the first second of the game.”

With Nyssa passing the ball around Umatilla’s zone defense to stall, Bow switched his team to a man-to-man set. The first quarter ended tied at 7, but the No. 2 Class 3A Vikings opened an 11-point halftime lead. Umatilla claimed the third and fourth quarters by four points combined.

Jessica Siler scored 10 points and was Umatilla’s only player to score in double figures. Catherine Routson and Kassie Kennedy had nine points apiece.

Umatilla should regain its No. 1 standing in Oregon 3A on Tuesday after top-ranked Vale plays Grant Union in a game with low power ranking dividends.

Next up for Umatilla will be the Riverside Pirates in a rivalry game set for Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Boardman. Umatilla will host its first district playoff game on Feb. 26 against an opponent to be determin
