KENNEWICK - Advancing a league high five boys to the 3A-2A-1A State Tournament, the Umatilla Vikings ran away with the title at the Special District 4 District tournament Saturday.

The Vikings advanced two doubles teams to the semifinals Saturday and the duo of Mario Aparicio and Luis Magana advanced to the finals after upsetting Ione's Arthur Lima and R.J. Ramos 6-2, 3-6, 6-4. Aparicio and Magana took second after losing to Sherman's Scot Stroud and Dominik Nibler 6-3, 6-3 in the title match.

Alan Lougee and Adolfo Campos took second for Umatilla.

In singles play, Riverside's Luca Barro made quick work of the field to win a state title for the Pirates. He beat Ricky Angel of McLoughlin 6-0, 6-1 in the semis before knocking off Umatilla's Curtis Watson in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0.

Along with Angel, the Pioneers will send Anthony Martinez to the state tournament after he beat Angel in the third place match 8-5.

Girls tennis

KENNEWICK - The Stanfield Tigers won the district title in the SD4 conference tournament Saturday, thanks in large part to advancing two doubles pairs into the finals, with Erica Gerhke and Jessenia Carrillo beating out teammates Ina Lopez and Luci Alvarez in the title match 6-2, 6-0.

"Stanfield took the girls title edging out Umatilla due to fantastic doubles play of Gerhke-Carrillo (District Champions) and Alvarez and Lopez," Umatilla coach Keith Gebers said. "They did a great job this year and they played well."

The Vikings also advanced a player to the final match in the singles, but No. 1 seed Irene Routson was ousted by Melanie Belshe of Sherman 6-2, 7-5 in surprising fashion.

Gebers said the strong service of game of Belshe was the biggest difference in the match.

Along with Routson, the Vikings will also send the doubles pair of Kaitlin Kennedy and Megan Hendon to state after they took third at districts, beating out Helix's Kari Papineau and Crystal McMurray 6-4, 6-4. The Grizzly tandem will also advance.

The third place match in the singles bracket pitted two Ione Cardinals against each other, with Brenna Rietmann beating Vanessa Godolleova 6-2, 6-2
