Posted Wednesday September 23, 2009

UMATILLA - The Umatilla Vikings hosted the Riverside Pirates in their first match since their state semi-final match last November. The Vikings won that match and went on to the state final. The latest meeting on Tuesday, September 22, 2009 ended in a 1-1 tie. Umatilla had more shots on goal in the first half. Riverside took more shots on goal in the second.

Umatilla was the quicker team in the first half working the ball up and down the pitch. Riverside made a strong series of drives deep into the Vikings zone between the 19th and 21st minutes but came up empty. Then at the 27th minute a crossing pass was headed in by Umatilla's Yeldar Orduna giving the Vikings the 1-0 lead. That was the only scoring during the first half.

Riverside came out stronger in the second half with significantly more shots on goal than the Vikings. Neither team was able to score a goal through three quarters of the half. Then in the 31st minute as the ball bounced around in front of the Vikings net a Pirate headed it in for the tieing goal. With score tied at 1-1 Umatilla increased the pressure on the Riverside goal over the final ten minutes of the match but came up empty. In the fading light of sunset the whistle blew the game final with the score 1-1.
